John Beattie

John is the Chair of the NZSC Registration Board for Registered Safety Professionals. He is a senior HSEQ Director having held several executive HSE General Manager roles with large international corporates. His background includes a career as an Engineering Artificer and Systems Engineer. He has also worked in the construction, rail, mining, infrastructure, transportation, forestry, telecommunications, gas, and manufacturing industry sectors. He specialises in developing due diligence governance and in leading organisational safety and environment capability through positive performance indicators and outcome measures. He is passionate about improving health, safety and environmental professionalism throughout Australasia.

Karyn Beattie

Karyn is a Safety, Health and Environmental professional currently the Group Sustainability Manager at Active Refrigeration Limited and Thermal Solutions. She also represents the council regularly, speaking at conferences and forums, volunteering for charitable work and mentoring other safety professionals. Karyn currently serves as the Media Manager for the New Zealand Safety Council and handles enquiries.

Andy Loader

Past President of the Institute of Quarrying New Zealand branch (1991), elected Honorary Fellow 2005. Served 16 years on the national executive committee. I have been managing my own Consultancy Company (First Rock Consultancy Ltd) providing training and assessment services, safety and health management planning, resource consent services, mine and quarry planning services and auditing services, since 1995 and was elected as a member of the inaugural New Zealand Mining Board of Examiners 2013. Prior to this I was employed as an Inspector of Quarries in the Mining Inspection Group of the Ministry of Commerce for nine years. Foundation member of the New Zealand Safety Council. Accredited as a Registered Safety Professional (RSP Registration No.010) by the NZ Safety Council 30-05-04. Accredited Safety Auditor (ASA Registration No: 006) by the NZ Safety Council February 2006. Elected to the position of CEO May 2013 and retired from the executive in June 2017. Re appointed the the board in September 2019.

Jodi Wright

“Jodi has been working in the OHSE field for more than 20 years with a wealth of experience in many high risk industries. Jodi started working as a nurse completing her training in 1975 and proceeded to extend her knowledge by undertaking the Pharmacy Technicians Certificate completing this in 1981. Over the years Jodi has continued to extend her knowledge base by undertaking multiple courses, some being a post grad Diploma in Health (Case Management) and Masters OHSE in 2011. Jodi is a registered Health and Safety Professional and an Accredited Safety Auditor. Jodi was recognised by industry and awarded the New Zealand Health and Safety Professional in 2012.”

Anthony Stephenson

Tony Stephenson. BE (Melb), ME (Auck), FCQI, Sr Mbr ASQ

Tony has worked internationally as well as in NZ with a wide range of different industries including automotive, aeronautical, pharmaceutical, electronics, food and beverage, kiwifruit and horticulture and the construction industry sectors as well as government agencies involving science, aviation and border security.

He has worked with certification and accreditation bodies in Europe, Asia Pacific, Australia, and NZ as well as the USA and Brazil for over 30 years and is currently a committee member in NZ and Australia on several standards committees including ISO 45001:2018.

He is currently the Chairman of the IQM Group internationally and is the Moderator and Course developer for Exemplar Global offerings through the IQM Group internationally. He is also on the Board of the NZ Business Excellence Foundation.

Tony was the initial Moderator for NZSC in 2002. He was an Auditor for the ACC WSMP scheme until 2017. His initial Degree was in Industrial Engineering which had a significant involvement in OH and S matters from ergonomics and safety locking systems through to industrial impact on the human body including dust and aggressive particulates as well as noise control.

In the past he was a competitive cyclist, badminton, cricket, and tennis player until the body said enough! Now it is concentration time on the wide-ranging aspects of Business Development (he is a Business Mentor) including Management Systems, training, and development. Curiously he finds time to carry out Management Systems Audits for several certification bodies covering OH and S, Environment and Quality. He is a keen supporter of integrated management systems.

Phillip Tse

Phillip is a foundation member of the Safety Council. He specialises in the Health and Safety aspects of hazardous substance and dangerous goods management. Phillip was a member of the Co-ordinating Group for the Harmonisation of Chemical Classification Systems (the group that managed the development of the Globally Harmonised System (GHS)). Phillip has represented the New Zealand government at the UN Committee of Experts for the Transport of Dangerous Goods and was a member of the working group responsible for elucidation the flammable and reactive chemicals criteria for the GHS. He was a consultant to the Ministry for the Environment during the drafting of the Hazardous Substances and New Organism Act and undertook over 40 projects leading to Regulations development. As a Consultant he has provided advice to Ministry of Transport, Maritime NZ, Civil Aviation and Land Transport Authority as well as commercial clients. He has undertaken projects for ERMA (now EPA).
